i have been performing (first piano then voice), teaching voice, and promoting classical music and the arts in general (kut-fm, npr affiliate) for the last 45 years. i heard the escher string quartet last night at the unitarian church giving their concert for the austin chamber music center. it was a revelation to hear these young people play with such authority and passion. the bartok 6th was profoundly inspired. i was remembering my piano teacher, louis galanffy, also a hungarian immigrant who knew and was a young associate of bartok's. when i had lessons there was always the picture of bartok looking down from the mantle.

many times i have worried about the future of classical music. hearing the escher has convinced me that we're in good hands after all!

Y'all should apply to participate en masse in the MARLBORO MUSIC FESTIVAL in Vermont next summer! There's nothing quite like it. An absolutely marvellous scene!
